Like most women with other things in life, you probably don't give much thought to have vaginal secretions. As long as it looks and feels normal – means clear or Aqua and white sticky bit, depending on where in the cycle you have no cause for concern.

But when something in your lingerie looks or feels off, that sounds alarm bells. Maybe there is much more to it than usual, a strange color, or you press with a whiff of smell that you know can't be good. Before you panic and buy all the creams and sprays in the hallway bit Lady at your local pharmacy, read our decoder.

It is clear to white and wet, Demystified

It's probably: ovulation. Slippery discharge appears during the middle of your cycle; it's the way the body making it easier for the sperm sliding down into the vagina and fertilize an egg. "It could be ovulation discharge abundant," says Dr Elisa Dweck, my OB-GYN in Westchester, New York, and coauthor of "v is for vagina". "I hear a lot of patients who are concerned about the wrong thing, but it's normal." no wonder this kind of sex is kind of prefer women when you whites!

It's probably: yeast infection, which is caused by an overgrowth of yeast that normally helps balance the bacteria in the vagina. "There is usually a lot of cheese looking discharge," Dweck. It says "both partners need to heal, which will keep passing the infection either back and forth to each other," Dweck.

Is gray, thin, and has a strong smell

It's probably: BV (BV). "The smell is the hallmark-kind of stink, like fish," says Dweck. We know – nothing you want a whiff of when you take off your underwear. BV also very common (more than vaginal infection common among women aged 15 to 44, according to the Centers for disease control and prevention) and easily remedied with medication prescriptions once the doctor's diagnosis. It's a bit of a mystery why some women, but generally means that something might disrupt the bacterial balance in the vagina, although experts were not always sure what.

Is brothers, smelly, tinged gray or green

It's probably: trichomoniasis. Healing is the most common STD in the country, according to the CDC, however you don't have to have sex to catch it. Say "Trichomoniasis is caused by organisms that can live on towels and jigs and other inanimate objects," Dweck. Equally as alarming, and most men and women who have no symptoms, but if left untreated, it can make it easier for women to contract HIV and affect the health of her baby if she is pregnant, the CDC reports. The good news is that you can treat and cure the prescription very quickly.

It is bloody

It's probably: Breakthrough bleeding, which often occurs during the first few months after you go to the pill, as the body adjusts to the hormones. If dark red or brown discharge, it could simply be leftover blood from your period that took the time to leave the vagina. In rare cases, bloody discharge could signal something more menacing — for example, cervical lesion early. "Let your doctor know, so they can check out and exclude a serious issue," Dweck.
